Project Description
Kruskal-avenue-upgrade
This public seating project on Kruskal Avenue in Bellville was designed to provide a durable, low-maintenance solution for a high-traffic urban environment. The installation combined robust structural elements with natural timber finishes to create functional seating that complements the surrounding streetscape.
The foundation of the seating consists of cast in-situ concrete columns, reinforced internally with rebar to ensure structural strength and long-term stability. These columns were carefully positioned and set to form the base framework of the installation. To achieve the curved design, hot-dip galvanized angle iron was custom-bent to 90 degrees and shaped to create a smooth radius, forming the supporting structure for the seating surface. The galvanizing process provides excellent corrosion resistance, making the framework ideal for outdoor public use.
Garapa timber was selected for the seating surface due to its durability, density, and natural resistance to weathering. The hardwood’s warm tone adds a welcoming aesthetic contrast to the industrial steel and concrete elements, while offering a comfortable and long-lasting seating solution. The completed installation delivers a strong, contemporary public feature that balances structural integrity with refined natural finishes.
