What this service covers

Work on timber that is already there.

01

Sanding timber decks

Worn boards, raised grain and tired coatings are prepared so the wearing surface can take a new finish. Sanding is specified from the timber and the existing coating — not as a one-size package.

02

Repairing damaged structure

Failed boards, split edges, loose junctions and tired posts are repaired where the remaining timber allows. If replacement is the honest answer, that is said plainly before the work starts.

03

Recoating outdoor timber

Oils and sealants follow the timber actually used. A teak sealant on the Franschhoek Guest Suite is that project finish, not a default for every Western Cape deck.

What timber maintenance is here

This is site work on outdoor timber that already exists: decks, pergolas, screens, stairs and edges. It is not a catalogue restoration kit and it is not a claim that timber can be made maintenance-free. The first conversation is what is there, what has failed, and whether sanding, repair or replacement is the right next step.

Sanding a timber deck

Sanding is for boards that are still sound. It prepares the wearing surface, takes down weathering that the finish can no longer carry, and sets the floor up for recoating. Cape Town sun, wind and coastal air change how fast that surface weathers. There is no published sanding calendar.

Repairing damaged timber

Boards that have moved, edges that have failed, and junctions that no longer meet the building are construction problems. They are assessed on site. House Cronje in Fish Hoek, House Mateo in Kommetjie and House Naude in Hermanus are coastal residential examples of timber that has to live with exposure — they are completed builds, not a restoration gallery.

Pergolas, screens and stairs

Maintenance is not only a deck. Posts, shade structures, privacy screens and access timber are looked at with the same eye. The Sea Point Cafe pergola and the Balau work at Rondebosch, Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand show the kind of outdoor timber that has to be looked after over time.

How a maintenance brief starts

Send photographs of the timber, the suburb, and what has changed. Phone 021 001 2097, WhatsApp +27 63 970 7843, or use the project enquiry form. There is no file upload on the form — email images to [email protected] if needed. A quotation follows the brief after we see the work. No rate card is published.

How the work is approached

How a maintenance job is approached.

01

Read the timber

Photographs, the suburb and a look at what has failed. Sound boards, failed junctions and honest replacement are separated before tools come out.

02

Prepare the surface

Sanding and cleaning where the timber can take it. Methods the original specification did not allow are not used as a shortcut.

03

Repair what has failed

Boards, edges, posts and junctions are repaired or replaced as the brief requires. Structure is not ignored for the sake of a new coat.

04

Recoat as specified

The finish follows the timber on site and the exposure. Coastal decks and sheltered inland floors are not treated as the same object.

Questions

Before you enquire.

Do you only maintain decks you built?

No. Existing timber is assessed from the site: what is there, what has failed, and whether sanding, repair or replacement is the honest next step.

Can you sand a timber deck?

Yes, when the boards are sound enough to take it. Sanding is specified from the timber and the existing finish, not as a catalogue package.

Can damaged structure be repaired?

Often. Failed boards, edges, posts and junctions are repaired where the remaining timber allows. If replacement is the honest answer, that is said plainly.

Is this a restoration product line?

No. There is no kit, no published oiling calendar and no guaranteed grey-off time. The work is specified for the timber that is already on site.

How often should a deck be sanded or recoated?

There is no published interval. Cape Town sun, wind and coastal air change how fast a finish weathers. That is part of the site conversation.

Can you maintain pergolas, screens and stairs as well as decks?

Yes, when that is the brief. Outdoor timber is assessed as one object.

What should we send to start?

Photographs of the timber, the suburb, and what has changed. Phone 021 001 2097, WhatsApp +27 63 970 7843, or use the project enquiry form.

How much does timber maintenance cost?

Cost follows the brief. No rate card is published. Access, how much has failed, and whether repair or replacement is required all affect the work.
