Decking timber

Ipe decking timber in Cape Town.

Ipe is one of the densest hardwoods commonly specified for premium outdoor decks. It is olive-brown to dark chocolate when new.

Overview

What this timber is.

Ipe is a very heavy South American hardwood used as a wearing surface where the brief wants extreme density. In Cape Town it is discussed for high-wear decks, commercial platforms and coastal floors — when it can actually be supplied and machined for the job.

At a glance

At a glance.

  • Botanical name: Handroanthus spp. (formerly Tabebuia; sold as Ipe or ironwood).
  • Very dense imported hardwood (ironwood).
  • Fresh colour: olive to dark brown; weathers silver-grey if uncoated.
  • Heavy — the supporting structure has to be designed for it.
  • Not described here as maintenance-free.

Our approach

Suited environment.

Often considered for Cape Town sites with strong UV, furniture traffic or public use. Salt air still decides the metal. Poor ventilation under a heavy board is still a moisture problem.

What it is

The board is so dense it is often compared with Massaranduba. Fresh colour ranges from olive through brown. It is hard on tools, usually pre-drilled, and heavy on the frame. Hidden clips and face-screwing are both method conversations, not slogans. Ipe is not composite, and it is not maintenance-free timber. Deckspertz does not publish a lifespan, a rate card, or a maintenance-free claim for this timber.

Suited environment

Ipe is discussed for Atlantic seaboard homes, hospitality terraces and commercial walking surfaces because it resists abrasion. That reputation does not remove the need for falls, gaps and a frame designed for the weight. Coastal Camps Bay or Sea Point jobs still need corrosion-aware fixings. A shaded southern-suburb deck will weather differently from a west-facing balcony.

What happens over time

Uncoated Ipe weathers toward silver-grey. Oils hold the brown longer on the surface they still cover. Surface checking can appear. Traffic lanes lose finish first. Greying is weathering, not a stain colour you can order.

How Deckspertz specifies it

Ipe is listed as an option depending on availability. It is not named on a completed Deckspertz project page at the time this guide was written. Specification covers profile, substructure, fasteners and finish for that site. Supply in Cape Town changes. This page is a species guide, not a stock list.

Questions

Before you enquire.

Is Ipe maintenance-free?

No. That claim is not made on this website. Ipe still weathers and still needs cleaning; colour hold depends on finish and exposure.

Is it the same as Massaranduba?

No. They are different species with different colour and working properties.

Start a project

Specify timber from the site, not a catalogue name.

Share the suburb, how the outdoor floor will be used, and photographs if you have them. Availability of Ipe is checked for the job.
