Decking timber

Sugar gum for Cape Town outdoor timber.

Sugar gum is an Australian eucalypt grown in South Africa and used for poles, outdoor structures and, when suitably graded, decking and other exterior timber.

Overview

What this timber is.

Eucalyptus cladocalyx is a dense eucalypt, typically reddish-brown in the heartwood. In the Western Cape it is part of the local hardwood conversation alongside other gums, not as a tropical import.

At a glance

At a glance.

  • Botanical name: Eucalyptus cladocalyx.
  • South African-grown eucalypt (E. cladocalyx).
  • Denser than treated pine; different from tropical imports.
  • Weathers towards grey; can check in strong Cape sun.
  • Decking-grade stock is not assumed from pole supply.

Our approach

Suited environment.

Discussed for Western Cape decks and structures that can take a eucalypt hardwood, including inland and winelands sites. Coastal salt still governs metal. Wide, poorly restrained boards in full sun will move.

What it is

Sugar gum is harder than pine and often used where a South African-grown eucalypt is preferred to imported tropical hardwoods. Boards and sections have to be correctly dried and graded for decking; pole-grade gum is not automatically a wearing surface. Interlocked grain can make machining and movement more interesting than a straight-grained Balau board. Deckspertz does not publish a lifespan, a rate card, or a maintenance-free claim for this timber.

Suited environment

Sugar gum has a history in South African outdoor construction — posts, beams and, where the stock is right, decks. Cape Town summer UV is strong; eucalypts can check on exposed faces. Winelands and northern-suburb gardens with good air movement are a more typical setting than a constantly wet, shaded south wall. Near the sea, treat it as any outdoor hardwood: detail the frame, the gaps and the fasteners.

What happens over time

Heartwood starts reddish to brown and weathers toward grey on exposed faces. Fine checking is common on eucalypt decks left to the sun. Coatings even the colour while they last. Movement between seasons is expected; fixing pattern and board width are part of living with that, not a defect list.

How Deckspertz specifies it

Sugar gum is included because it is used in South African outdoor timberwork. It is not named on a completed Deckspertz project page at the time this guide was written. Grade, moisture, profile and finish are specified from the site. Supply in Cape Town changes. This page is a species guide, not a stock list.

Questions

Before you enquire.

Is sugar gum the same as red grandis?

No. Sugar gum is Eucalyptus cladocalyx. Red grandis is typically Eucalyptus grandis (or a related plantation grandis). Different trees, different density and colour.

Can it be used on the coast?

It can be discussed for coastal jobs if the grade, detailing and fasteners suit the exposure. Salt air does not disappear because the timber is locally grown.

Specify timber from the site, not a catalogue name.

Share the suburb, how the outdoor floor will be used, and photographs if you have them. Availability of Sugar gum is checked for the job.
