Our approach
Considered for Western Cape outdoor floors and structures where a red eucalypt is wanted and the boards are dry enough for the job. Full sun and wide boards increase movement. Coastal metal still has to be specified.
The colour is the reason many people ask for it. Density and gum vein, drying quality and board stability vary with the stock. It is still a eucalypt: it can move, check and weather. It is not a tropical hardwood and it is not treated pine. Deckspertz does not publish a lifespan, a rate card, or a maintenance-free claim for this timber.
Inland Cape Town, northern suburbs and the Winelands are typical places this timber is discussed. A wet, shaded courtyard or a salt-sprayed Atlantic deck is a harder brief — possible only with the right grade, gaps, ventilation and fasteners. Do not assume furniture-grade colour outdoors.
The red heartwood dulls and then greys on faces that see weather. Oils deepen the red while they remain. Checking along the grain is common on eucalypts in Cape UV. Adjacent pale masonry can pick up colour from extractives when the timber is new and wet.
Red river gum is included as a Cape Town decking conversation, not as a named completed-project timber on this website at the time of writing. Moisture content, profile and finish are specified from the site. Supply in Cape Town changes. This page is a species guide, not a stock list.

Questions
Not if it is left to the weather. Coatings hold colour for a time. Uncoated red river gum greys like other outdoor eucalypts.
