Decking timber

Saligna for Cape Town decking.

Saligna is the trade name many Cape Town yards use for plantation eucalypt decking. It overlaps with the red grandis conversation and should be confirmed on the actual board.

Overview

What this timber is.

In South Africa, saligna usually means eucalypt hardwood grown for structural and outdoor use. It is a common decking timber in Cape Town when the brief wants a local hardwood look at a practical specification.

At a glance

At a glance.

  • Botanical name: Eucalyptus grandis / E. saligna group (South African plantation eucalypt sold as saligna).
  • South African plantation eucalypt, commonly sold as decking.
  • Related in the trade to red grandis — confirm the parcel.
  • Weathers grey; coating holds colour for a time.
  • Lighter than tropical decking hardwoods.

Our approach

Suited environment.

Widely discussed for suburban and Winelands decks that will be finished and maintained. Coastal and high-traffic jobs need a closer look at density, fasteners and coating.

What it is

Colour runs from pale pink to reddish-brown. Density is generally below yellow Balau and well below Ipe. The name on the invoice matters: saligna, grandis and “gum” are not always the same parcel of timber. For a wearing surface you want decking-grade, dry boards — not mixed structural offcuts. Deckspertz does not publish a lifespan, a rate card, or a maintenance-free claim for this timber.

Suited environment

Saligna is part of everyday Cape Town decking language from the northern suburbs through to Stellenbosch. It can be used on the peninsula and Atlantic seaboard if the detailing is honest about salt and UV. It is a weaker choice if the owner wants an uncoated, furniture-stable dark hardwood with little movement.

What happens over time

Like other eucalypt decks, uncoated saligna greys and can raise grain and check. Oils and sealers even the colour until weather removes them. Expect more seasonal movement than Massaranduba or Ipe. Recoating is part of owning the floor if you care about colour.

How Deckspertz specifies it

Saligna is listed because it is commonly used in Cape Town decking. It is not named on a completed Deckspertz project page at the time this guide was written. Confirm species and grade when comparing quotations. Supply in Cape Town changes. This page is a species guide, not a stock list.

Questions

Before you enquire.

Should I read the red grandis page as well?

Yes if a quotation says grandis, saligna or gum. The two pages describe the same family of Cape Town eucalypt decking and why the invoice name should be specific.

Start a project

Specify timber from the site, not a catalogue name.

Share the suburb, how the outdoor floor will be used, and photographs if you have them. Availability of Saligna is checked for the job.
